What Is Clothing?
Clothing refers to any garment that covers the human body
that is worn to provide warmth, protection from the elements
or for social considerations.
What Is Apparel?
Apparel (attire, clothes, clothing, dress, garment)refers to
articles worn to cover the body.
TYPES OF WOMEN'S
CLOTHING/APPAREL
Armwear
1. Bracelets - Bracelets are pieces of jewelry which
is worn around the wrist of people. Bracelets are usually
worn for adornment purposes but may also be used for medical
and identification purposes. They can be made from metal,
leather, cloth, plastic or other materials. Bracelets may
contain a variety of elements including jewels, rocks, wood,
and/or shells.
2. Gloves - Gloves are garments that cover the hand. There
are many different types of gloves. Gloves have separate
"sleeves" for each finger and the thumb. Gloves that have
finger openings without the sleeves are called "fingerless
gloves". Fingerless gloves that have one large opening in
place of individual openings for each finger are referred to
as gauntlets. Gloves that cover the whole hand or fist but
do not have separate finger
openings or sleeves are called mittens.
Coats
Coats are long garments worn for warmth, protection or
fashion. Coats usually have long sleeves and have an opening
at front which closes by means of buttons, zippers,
hook-and-loop fasteners, a belt, or a combination of some of
these.
Dresses
Dresses (also referred to as frocks or a gowns) are garments
worn by women and girls consisting of a skirt with an
attached bodice (an article of clothing for women, covering
the body from the neck to the waist).
Footwear
Footwear refers to garments worn on the feet. They are worn
for protection against the environment, fashion and
adornment.
Gowns
Gowns are long, loose, undivided garments that cannot be
fully opened at the front.
Headgear
Headgear refers to any item of clothing which is worn on the
head. Headwear is worn to protect the head from impact,
cold, heat, rain, etc., to keep hair contained, for
decoration or fashion, religious reasons, medical purposes,
modesty; social considerations, to disguise baldness and
many other reasons.
Hosiery
Hosiery refers to garments worn directly on the feet and
legs. Hosiery is also referred to as legwear.
Jackets
Jackets are garments worn over other clothing to provide for
warmth or protection from the weather. Jackets may be waist

Neckwear
Neckwear refers to articles of clothing worn around the
neck. Neckwear is worn for fashion reasons or for protection
against the weather. Neckwear include bow ties, neckties,
scarves, feather boas and shawls.
Ponchos
Ponchos are outer wear garments usually made from watertight
materials and are designed to keep the body dry and warm
from the rain. Ponchos are considered typical South American
garments. Ponchos are typically a single large sheet of
fabric with an opening in the center for the head. Sometimes
there is an attached hood that covers the head. Rainproof
ponchos usually have fasteners to close the sides once the
poncho is draped over the body, with openings provided for
the arms. Ponchos are also worn as fashion items. They are
made in a variety of colors and are designed to look stylish
and are often made from wool or yarn.
Robes
Robes are loose-fitting outer garments. A robe is different
from a cape or cloak because it usually has sleeves.
Cloaks
Cloaks are loose garments that are worn over indoor
clothing. Cloaks serve the same purpose as an overcoat as
they protect the wearer from the cold, rain or wind. Cloaks
may be worn as part of a fashionable outfit or uniform.
Cloaks are as old as human history; there has nearly always
been some form of long, unstructured outer garment used to
protect people from the weather. Over time cloak designs
have been changed to match current styles and textile needs.
Cloaks generally fasten at the neck or over the shoulder,
have an attached hood, and may cover and fasten down the
front. Cloaks are almost always sleeveless.
Scarfs
Scarfs are pieces of fabric usually worn around the neck
Scarfs may also be worn on the head or around the waist.
Scarfs come in an assortment of colors and are usually worn
for warmth, fashion or for religious purposes.
Shawls
Shawls are items of clothing, worn loosely over the
shoulders, upper body and arms, and sometimes over the head.
Shawls are usually rectangular or square of cloth, that is
often folded to make a triangle but can also be triangular
in shape.
Skirts
Skirts are tube or cone shaped garments usually worn by
women that hang from the waist and covers all or part of the
legs. Simple skirts can be made from a single piece of
material. Modern skirts are typically made from light to
mid-weight fabrics are often worn with slips to make the
material of the skirt drape better and for modesty. The
hemline of skirts varies with current fashion styles and
with custom, personal taste, social context and cultural
considerations.
Suits (Clothing)
Suits are a form of clothing made from the same clothing
material and consist of at minimum a jacket and trousers.
Lounge suits are the most common style of Western suit.
Dinner suits are another type of suit. Suits are usually
worn with a collared shirt and necktie. Suits come in
different styles with a different numbers of pieces Two
piece suits have a jackets and the trousers. Three piece
suits include a added waistcoat.
Swimsuits
Swimsuits are also known as bathing suits, or swimming
costumes. Swimsuits are items of clothing designed to be
worn while engaging in a water- based activity such as
swimming, or during activities in the sun. Bathing suits can
be worn as undergarments in sports that require a wetsuit
such as water skiing, scuba diving, etc. Swimsuits are also
fashion apparel worn to display the body. There are many
styles of modern swimsuits.
Tops (Clothing)
Tops are articles of clothing or garments that cover the
torso. There are 6 main categories of tops including
aprons, necklines, shirts, sweaters, t-shirts and vests.
Trousers & Shorts
Trouser and shorts are broad terms for all types of garments
for the lower body which divide into two parts, one for each
leg (skirts and dresses do not).
Bikinis
A bikini is a women's two-piece swimsuit. One piece of the
bikini covers the breasts and the other part covers the
crotch and part of or the entire buttocks, leaving an
uncovered area between the two.
Foundation Garments
Foundation garments (shape wear or shaping underwear) are
undergarments worn to alter the wearer's body shape, usually
to achieve a more fashionable figure.
Hosiery
Hosiery (also referred to as legwear) are garments worn on
the feet and legs.
Lingerie
Lingerie is fashionable and possibly alluring undergarment.
Socks
Socks are items of clothing worn on the feet. Socks are worn
to protect the foot, keep it warm and absorb sweat.
T-Shirts
T-shirts (or tees) are a style of shirt. They are button
less and collarless with short sleeves. T-shirts often have
a round neck line and are usually made of cotton. T-shirts
have a distinctive soft feeling or texture. T-shirts are
often decorated with text or pictures.
Shirts
Shirts are cloth garments for the upper body.
Pants/Trousers
Pants/Trousers are clothing worn on the lower part of the
body that cover from the waist to the ankles, including both
legs separately (unlike skirts and dresses). Shorts are
similar to trousers, but only cover the legs down to the
area of the knee.
Belts
Belts are flexible bands or straps, usually made of leather
or heavy cloth which are worn around the waist. Belts are
worn for fashion as well as to support trousers or other
pieces of clothing.
